What future for CHP and District Heating?
Where does CHP/DH fit in a rapidly changing energy scene?
LowC's Business Development Director, Dr Andrew Horsley is speaking this one-day practical conference organised by CIBSE’s Combined Heat & Power Group.
Where does CHP fit in the governments drive towards carbon emission
reduction targets of 50% by 2025. CHP has become prevalent in large new
build developments but the real drive towards these onerous targets needs
to be in the existing building stock. Where there are significant heat demands
then gas fired CHP with district heating can currently provide a practical
and viable solution to improving existing buildings CO2 emissions. District
heating can be used as a low carbon supply for a large number of buildings,
particularly difficult to deal with existing buildings. But what role will CHP/DH
play in the future?
As we move to a low carbon economy and decarbonised electricity and gas
grids, what role can CHP/DH play? Will CHP and district heating schemes
become obsolete stranded assets or will they play a significant part in
delivering low carbon heat and power? Can DH systems be viable with other
fuels and technologies at their heart? Will renewable forms of CHP play a
role with district heating? Might a decarbonised gas grid supply decentralised
CHP/DH with more renewable fuels?
This conference will launch a major update to CIBSE’s key CHP publication
AM12 and will discuss the future for CHP and District Heating in buildings.
This conference is for:
- Facilities managers
- Energy Managers
- Building services engineers
- Property developers, owners and Landlords
- Low Carbon Consultants and assessors
- CHP/DH consultants, contractors and manufacturers

EBEC (European Biofuels Expo and Conference)
Held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, EBEC (European Biofuels Expo and Conference) is the largest dedicated Bioenergy event in Europe.
LowC's Doug Chaplin will be speaking in the Biomass Theatre on Wednesday 5th October 2011. The event is free to attend and you'll be able to hear all about our new advanced gasification biomass CHP technology - Arbor ElectroGen.
The bioenergy market is one of the fastest growing and fastest moving in the world today. If you are already involved in biofuel or bioenergy production or thinking about adopting bioenergy for your organisation, this is your chance to explore all the latest methods and costs of production as well as performance for yourself.

Central Bedfordshire Biomass Workshop
LowC’s Andrew Horsley will be speaking at a biomass workshop being run by Central Bedfordshire Council. The event takes place on Wednesday 5th of October 2011.
Venue: The Forest Centre, Marston Vale Millennium Country Park, MK43 0PR.
Webpage for directions: www.marstonvale.org/map/index.html
Time: 9 for 9:30am – 12:30pm
Aims of the Workshop:
- Identify local sources of biomass
- Manage local woodlands to provide the resource of biomass and increase biodiversity
- Develop a co-ordinated approach to the distribution and use of biomass in Bedfordshire
- Create a local biomass industry
- Identify potential markets for the biomass
- Address issues/ barriers regarding increased use of biomass
- Identify facilities to invest in to set-up to process biomass
- Stimulate the local economy and move towards a low carbon economy
Proposed programme:
9.30-9.45 - Welcome and introductions – James Russell, Forest Director – Forest of Marston Vale.
9.45-10.05 - Presentation – Claire Wardle, FWAG – an overview the potential for biomass, benefits for woodland management, the scope of the local biomass resource etc .
10.05-10.25 - Presentation – Andrew Horsley, LowC Communities Ltd - Biomass technologies. An overview of the range of options for biomass from boilers to CHP to syngas for electricity production. What the current technology can deliver and what are the financial incentives coming form government e.g. RHI, ROC’s etc
10.25-10.45 - Presentation – Phil Potter, Woodfuel East – examples of successful use of biomass in the region to show what’s possible, thoughts on next steps and an overview of support that is available.
10.45-11.00 - Refreshments
11:15-12.00 - Group work – to identify opportunities, barriers and actions to take to progress.
